Two Harvesting Practices Significantly Improve Protein Content of Bailed Hay

Two hay harvesting practices that will significantly improve the nutritional quality and economic value of baled hay are:

Cutting at the Proper Stage of Maturity

Baling higher moisture hay, a practice made possible by the application of Silak Liquid hay treatment to prevent spoilage.

This combination of cutting alfalfa at the proper stage of maturity (pre-bud to bud) and baling at 18% to 23% moisture offers an economical, efficient hay management program for producing high protein, more digestible hay.

For the dairy and livestock producer, the increased value of hay that is high in protein and digestible nutrients represents considerable savings in the cost of supplemental feeds.

Cutting at Proper Stage of Maturity

The nutrient composition of the alfalfa plant changes as its stage of maturity increases. Alfalfa contains its maximum content of crude protein and digestible dry matter at the pre-bud stage of growth. Then, as the plant matures, valuable nutrients decrease and crude fiber content increases, until late bloom alfalfa which produces forage with lowest feeding value.

Baling Higher Moisture Hay

Baling hay at higher moisture (18% - 24%) and applying Silak Liquid hay preservative to prevent heat and mold damage will improve the protein quality of baled hay.

When hay is baled at lower moisture, significant leaf loss occurs as a result of mechanical shattering. With approximately 70% of the alfalfa plant's protein contained in the leaf, excessive leaf loss at baling will reduce nutrient quality of baled hay. With lower feed value, the baled hay will be of considerably less economic value.

The greater value of higher moisture baled hay was proven by university research and Bio-Logics own field work which demonstrated that baling alfalfa at higher moisture (18% - 24%) will minimize leaf loss during harvesting to maximize nutrient content.

New Mexico State University research demonstrated that approximately 30% of the leaf material was lost when hay was cured down and baled at 15% moisture. Another New Mexico State study found that the most significant protein losses occurred when a alfalfa hay dried down from 23% - 13% moisture. This work showed that maximum protein can be harvested when hay is baled at about 23% moisture.

Field Trials Demonstrate Benefits of Higher Moisture Baling with Silak Liquid

Field trials, conducted during the 1994-5 hay growing season, also demonstrated that higher moisture baling with Silak Liquid produces higher quality forage with superior nutrient content.

One-ton square bales:

Tests on alfalfa hay baled in one-ton square bales showed that Silak Liquid treated hay baled at 20% moisture contained 12% more crude protein than untreated bales harvested at 14% moisture. Data also showed that the Silak Liquid treated one-ton bales contained 11% more digestible protein. When the bales were opened and evaluated for preservation quality. ALL of the high moisture Silak Liquid treated bales were classified as high quality bales free from any evidence of heat damage (browning) and/or mold.

Large Round Bales:

Field research also demonstrated that Silak Liquid effectively preserved high moisture (24.0%) 1200-pound round alfalfa bales.

According to F.R. Courtin, Agr. Eng. from Agri Bios Enrg., All of the Silak Liquid treated bales were free of any evidence of quality deterioration, such as browning, moldiness or foul odors. The untreated high moisture (21.3%) round bales showed considerable spoilage, particularly in the inner portion of the bales, and more than 50% of the untreated bales showed discoloration (browning), extensive foul odors and mold formation.

The purpose of this study was to determine the economical benefits of using Organozyme, a Natural, Non Toxic product for improving yields of various crops in Turkey. This study was conducted under the control of Mr. Francis Courtin Agr. Eng. and was made possible thanks to the assistance of the Canadian International Development Agency (C.I.D.A.)

Organozyme is a Patent Pending formulation based on a complex of plant extracts, of naturally occurring organic compounds, that have demonstrated their safety and value as effective aids to improve crop yields. It should also be noted that Oranozyme is also used and registered as a feed agent for use in poultry and livestock feed mixes under the name Ultra Natural, which clearly demonstrates its safety.

The crop types in these studies were Wheat (Cereal) Sites A and B and Carrots (Vegetable) Site C. We were forced to abandon a greenhouse Tomato Test due to a misunderstanding related to the mixing of Organozyme with fungicidal products which resulted in no difference. The owners have since re-tested Organozyme and reported an increase in yield of 17% and improved quality. They continue to use Organozyme with satisfaction and have extended its use on onions with reported higher yields and improved qu ality.


Method: A random block design was used with 6 replications. The blocks 6 X 1 Ha/sq.. Standard local fertilizer applications were based on 30/20/0 applied at a rate of 250 kgs/Ha. Standard applications of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides were also conducted but not recorded for purposes of our evaluations.

Organozyme (1, was mixed with 50 liters of water and 200 ml of Ultra Acid was added to the solution, in order to reduce the ph to 6.5.

The above solution was foliar applied 2 times - 1st application at the 3rd leaf stage - 2nd application 10 days later.

It is also interesting to note that there was a very marked increase of well over 50% in the amount of foliage harvested from the treated plots. This effect was not expected however it should be evaluated in future as it is a valuable commodity used in a nimal feeding.

Standard applications of herbicides and pesticides were also applied but n ot recorded for purposes of our evaluations.

Organozyme (1, was mixed with 50 litres of water. A Model 2000 Holsan 32 nozzle sprayer was used to apply the solutions. The water ph was 6.7 and no Ultra Acid was added.

The above solution was foliar applied 2 times - 1st application at the 3rd leaf stage - 2nd application 10 days later.

It is also interesting to note that there was a very marked increase of well over 30% in the amount of foliage harvested from the treated plots, as was also observed in SITE-A. This effect was not expected however it should be evaluated in future as it i s a valuable commodity used in animal feeding.


Method: A random block design was used with 12 replications. The blocks were 12 row plots - 10 meters long. The standard local fertilizer application consisted of 200 kgs./ha of 10/10/20 plus Ca and 10% solution of boron was applied during the growing s eason.

The 1st application of Organozyme was done at the 2nd to 3rd leaf stage and the 2nd application 10 days later, using a Holsan split wand 16 jet sprayer.

Organozyme (1000 ml) was mixed with 50 liters of water and 200 ml of Ultra Acid to maintain a solution ph of 6.2. Both applications were mixed and applied in this same manner.

Most of the recent research work attributes the heightened plant responses to the ingredients in Ultra OrganoZyme to plant growth regulating hormones. Bioassay and gas chromatographic methods have been used to show and confirm the presence cyt okinin ins, auxins and gibberlins in the ingredients contained in ULTRA ORGANOZYME.


Ultra OrganoZyme'S properties beneficially alter the tension of water, which helps release the nutrients that are bound (Locked Out) in the soil's structure. The available moisture can move throughout the soil as needed because Ultra OrganoZyme flocculates the soil and makes it more sponge-like, in order to retain moisture. During wet seasons, Ultra OrganoZyme treated soils allow water to go down to fill the soil matrix. The soil improves its water absorption and retention capabilities, w hich is beneficial during wet and dry spells.


Ultra OrganoZyme will with time open up and loosen compacted soils. This action results in improved percolation which allows the moisture to move naturally from subsurface into the root growth area. The plant can then build a more massive root structure. It allows the increase smaller capillaries that cannot penetrate a tight or alkaline soil. Consider that Ultra OrganoZyme contains more than 64 of these KEYS in minor amounts that could prove very effective at low use rates.
Enzymes are protein amino acids clusters. They speed up the rate of a specific trace element. This trace elem ent becomes the key which unlocks enzymatic activity and fires it up so that it does its job in the metabolic process. N.P. and K. are not taken up as plant nutrients except under enzymatic control. When this activity is deficient there is a shor t circuit that results in less production, or production without quality, or a crop incapable of defending itself against insects, bacterial and fungal attack. The normal solution is add more, and more N.P.K. herbicides, pesticides and every other suicid e you can find-or, add a little Ultra OrganoZyme because it does help.

Suggested Methods of use - We recommend 1st application at seeding, at a rate of 1 liter per hectare with 200 liters of water. Two (2) foliar applications at a rate of 1 liter (minimum) per hectare with 200 liters water when plants are active. One (1) so il application after harvest - Rate will depend on soil condition. (In conjunction with a 15 to 25% reduced fertilizer application program)


Use at a rate of 2 liters Ultra OrganoZyme with a minimum of 400 liters of water per hectare prior to seeding at the start of the season, and 1 liter Ultra OrganoZyme with 300 liters of water, after harvest at end of season.


This is the minimum suggested program. Mix 2 1/2 liters of Ultra OrganoZyme with a minimum of 200 liters of water per hectare - One (1) application per season.


Use at the rate of 1 part Ultra OrganoZyme with a minimum of 500 parts, and soak roots / let air dry.


Use at a rate of 1 liter Ultra OrganoZyme with a maximum of 50 liter of water. Soak seeds for a maximum of 90 seconds.

NOTE: Do not use during hot or windy days or when plants are dormant due to stress. Do not apply foliar sprays before or during rainy conditions. Soil applications should be applied before or during rainy conditions.

We do not recommend mixing Ultra OrganoZyme with any other product unless you pre-test the stability of the mixed solutions. Precaution: When mixing with most herbicides you should reduce the normal use rates by 15 to 25% due to the wetting abilities of the ingredients in the OrganoZyme formula. This is presently being studied by one of our divisions in Mexico, as it co uld have a very beneficial impact on the reduction of various chemical toxins.
